Cool, but his nose is too pointed ( Obama's) and his chin is too long, he is a handsome man, stop making him ugly, The picture however is cool!! Love the dogs and funny with his guys behind him Rahm and David

I need to know : If you were old enough, whom would you have voted for, and why? And, do you ever have nightmares about living in the White House?
  • Texan · 1 year ago
Ummm... how does the cartoonist "vet" Barack Obama? Is Obama a dog? Seems to me that Obama is doing the vetting...right? Your word placing is poor, but you are used to screwing up cartoons, right?
  • 456 · 1 year ago
this one at least was mildly amusing,
  • ChicagoSuz · 1 year ago
    Very cute...
  • Sarah · 1 year ago
Ironic how Obama is spending more time vetting a dog than McCain did vetting a vice presidential running mate.

Want to bet who ends up with the better dog?
  • cece · 1 year ago
    Good one!

    agree!

Very Funny! Hilarious! I think I broke my rib!
  • Margy · 1 year ago
I don't think we even "know" that it won't be a "girly dog." Watching the interview, I clearly understood that Barack was gently kidding both Michelle, his girls, and Barbara Walters, as he also was when he said it would be a big rambunctious dog. While this might be the way it plays out, you could tell that it was not a done deal, and I'll bet Michelle and the girls get the last word.
  • al in la · 1 year ago
If it was Bush instead of Obama in this drawing, the interview would be for Post Master General.
  • Gere Sukatytski · 1 year ago
I am afraid this cartoonist has no taste, sensitivity, or talent.
  • Lon · 11 months ago
    sensitivity? a cartoonist? grow up
  • berengina · 1 year ago
Too bad he made Axelrod look like Hitler - he just can't help himself can he!
  • esk203 · 1 year ago
Yes he has made Obama look like an Arab again. What's with this cartoonist anyway? Not that there is anything wrong with being an Arab. But Barack has an African nose not eastern!!
  • Buttons44 · 1 year ago
Seems BHO is difficult to capture even in a cartoon...NOT a good illustration of him or even his staffers...did DO the Dogs quite well, perhaps should stick to such or are there some inner disgruntled feelings showing as he attempts to capture the President -elect and his team hence the unflattering and not even amusing renditions ?
  • Susan G. · 1 year ago
The essence of good humor is the reflection of truth. With that criteria, this cartoon is wide of the mark.
  • Kia · 1 year ago
Wow, they really made Obama's features cartoonish. He's not ugly guys, so don't make him look so freakish next time. :)
  • Tonycat · 1 year ago
Agree....our next Prez is better looking and Alexrod is no Hitler lookalike so get your cartoons to better portray the next Administration or be subject to much flack!!

Obama should consider a reptile, perhaps one as large and rambunctious as a large dog. Such a reptile could be a mutt, so long as it was a hybrid. To fit the bill, such a reptile would probably have to be one of the large lizards found on the remote islands of Indonesia, where island effects often turn iguanas into dragons. I think a Komodo Dragon would be too large and rambunctious, but there are smaller iguana possibilities. Lacking fur, they would be compatible with Obama's children's allergies.

Of course, I seriously doubt the Obama children actually HAVE allergies. Allergies are frequently found by doctors in places where they don't exist - always a handy explanation for the sniffles or a cold. I myself was diagnosed as being allergic to cats. Had my mother believed this, I might still shun the purring lap warmers. But no, she soldiered on, placing her cat's interests in front of my own and I soon proved cat-tolerant.

Allergies are a frequent result of inbreeding and poor gene diversity in an individual, something with which the Obama children clearly are not afflicted. In their genomes they contain the diverse genes of Europeans, East Africans, and West Africans (and the latter two are more dissimilar than the former two). I seriously doubt they are allergic to anything. Indeed, their kind will be the most likely to survive the coming human demographic crunch.

As a fan of the "lesser considered creatures for presidental pets", I would like to throw my hat into the ring on behalf of rats. Smart and trainable, loyal to their human, and able to be whisked onto an airplane or into a bunker without batting a whisker. Plus, one look at a cute dumbo eared rattie riding on the shoulder of Sasha or Malia would stop terrorists in their tracks. I'm just sayin', think about it.

What the heck are you you talking about?
  • BLESSEDNTX · 1 year ago
At least this cartoon demonstrates how intelligent and thoughtful President Elect Obama is to even 'vet' the Pet.

The previous cover was horrendous and I still cannot believe that it was allowed to be printed. Racially, we've come a long way but we still have a
    very long way to go.

Obama should either get a poodle or a Samoyed. The bread is good for people with allergies.I too have allergies. I have a poodle and two Samoyed's. Samoyed and poodles have no dog odor. Poodles do not shed.
I rescued them from the shelter,. No regrets.

Yuk! Yuk! Yuk! This cartoon is supposed to nullify his nasty one? Blitt showed poor taste on an important issue. He's showing safe-taste now. He should stick to peripheral issues.

Where are the girls in this ? I expect Obama is about to get his first vet(o) shortly from his girls, no less.
  • swampy · 1 year ago
This one's quite cute. And human. Blitt's fist-bump cover was about the level of mean cartoon you'd expect from a sixth grader (an average one, -- not you my above average sixth grade readers).

Blitt is a caricaturist, and like most caricaturist, isn't nearly as funny as he thinks he is. "Do you like dogs? Suuuure you do, everyone likes dogs, here you go, next!"
  • Omaar · 1 year ago
The Obama's should select 2 pups...

    1. A male and female Beagle.

    2. A male and female Boxer.

    3. A male and female Labrador Retriever..

    One Vanila & Chocolate Retriever.

    4. A male and female Golden Retriever....

The Golden Retievers are a long shot, based on the dogs shedding of hair and Hypoallergenic issues.

Beagles, Boxers and Labradors are all Short Haired Dogs and they tend to shed less and these 3 Breeds are well known family dogs, not to mention, they are not "Girlie Dogs" at all...

Golden Retrievers, are long haired, they are great Family Dogs, but the hair and Hypoallergenic issues enter the picture.
  • thelarch · 1 year ago
    Well Barry,
The dogs look great. Love the dogs!
You can tell he cares about the dogs.
Obama needs to look more like a film star, like George Hamilton or Cloney.
Axelrod should look more like Charlie Chaplin not Hitler.
    Maybe have Rahm dancing, hmmm?
Much better in spirt then last time.
Didn't your editor tell you any of this?
Improvement over all though, keep up the better work.
  • Steve · 1 year ago
Is it just me or is this completely unfunny? The whole puppy/"vetting" thing is 3 weeks old already. I think Barry needs to retire. He wouldn't know funny if hit him in the face with a pie.
  • Sally in Georgia · 1 year ago
I think this is refreshing. Also, would love for you to give wider coverage to the New Yorker's Nov. 17 cover with the "O" in New Yorker illuminated like the moon over the Lincoln Memorial and the reflecting pool. That's a real collectors item...the whole issue is available at the New Yorker web site.http://archives.newyorker.com/?i=2008-11-17#folio=C1

Judas Gutenberg is an idiot. He obviously knows NOTHING about allergies. Allergies are a inherited condition that have NOTHING to do with 'inbreeding' of humans. Just because YOU were misdiagnosed, don't assume everyone else is. If Obama says his daughter has allergies, who are you to say she doesn't? You are certainly NOT her doctor!
The magazine cover is cute, he doesn't look like an Arab (whatever that means), he is readily identifiable as Barack Obama! And as an American of African and Caucasian descent, like most other African Americans including me--except his African ancestry is in much closer proximity.
And if McCain took as much time to look for a VP as Obama is in looking for a pet, he would have had a better result.
  • AC Power · 1 year ago
Anyone who finds this "controversial" doesn't have a good sense of humor. I think it is just hilarious. Great job New Yorker! You always are great with your covers no matter how satirical.

If he gets a black dog, white Americans may take offense & if he gets a white dog black Americans may feel he's segregating, so as Barack is half white & half black he should get a Dalmation and name it Barkat because Dalmations are good watchdogs & bark at everything in sight.
  • Linda s · 1 year ago
Why not a greyhound? They are not mutts generally, but need very much to be adopted. They are used to confined spaces, are so gentle and loving as well as fast and smart.

The girls need two small dogs, both sexes, so if one dog favors one child, the other child has the affections of the other. They want puppies, dogs that are little, that they can pick up in their arms. A large dog is cute for just a little while, then it chews furniture, then sleeps, its weight making if difficult for a smaller person to control. The Coton de tulear would be perfect; white, and from Madascar, small, not yippy and playful, sturdy, not too small, like westies. This is not the place for Obama to make a statement. The children should choose the dog or dogs that appeals to them, and he can have his own chocolate lab.

  • Litchfield · 1 year ago
I don't find this particularly good. Blitt is not a very good caricaturist. The guy who does Talk of the Town pix is much, much better. Risko is much better. Why does TNY keep hiring this mediocre artist for covers?

And whose idea is this? Lame. Furthermore, the girls should be in there choosing the dog, but I am sure that putting them on the cover is a no-no (and rightly so), so instead they stick in poor renditions of Axelrod etc. Earth to TNY: Get someone else on the Obama beat. Blitt does not cut it.

And give the puppy theme a rest. It is, like, totally unoriginal and unfunny, unsophisticated. The O-moon rising over the White House was brilliant. This is dumb. . God, truly we seem to be a nation of poodles.

This one's actually funny. Though I understand the intent in the artist's previous piece, it wasn't well executed... this I like.
